Fantasy Flight Games made the announcement last week during their yearly In Flight Report that they are bringing The Clone Wars into STAR WARS X-WING with Second Edition! Of course this is causing mixed feeling among the gaming community. Some are happy and others are angry. I am of the mind that this is good for the X-Wing Game.
The Clone Wars Factions will have their own flavor and feel unique. Fantasy Flight has made it clear now that they are remaking every STAR WARS Era so that it will feel like it did in the respective films and books.
With X-WING Second Edition we now have three variations of The Good: with The Republic, Rebel Alliance, and Resistance, The Bad: with The Separatists, Galactic Empire, and First Order, and The Ugly: with Scum & Villainy!
The fact that FFG has done so much to improve this beloved miniatures game is very telling of their love for the property! Most reasonable players knew that X-Wing had become a mess in recent years. Now all of that confusing bloat and power creep has been swept away! The separation of the factions further demonstrates the new clarity of the game's rules and attention to thematic detail that FFG is lovingly infusing into Second Edition. IT IS ALL GOOD.
I am very pleased with FFG now. They are doing George Lucas level work to make STAR WARS X-WING GREAT... again!
